10 Reasons Why You Ain’t Rich

by Scott Campbell

Many people assume they aren’t rich because they don’t earn enough money. “If I only earned a little more, I could save and invest better”, they say.

The problem with that theory is they were probably making exactly the same argument before their last several raises. Becoming a millionaire has less to do with how much you make, it’s how you treat money in your daily life.

The list of reasons you may not be rich doesn’t end at 10. Caring what your neighbors think, not being patient, having bad habits, not having goals, not being prepared, trying to make a quick buck, relying on others to handle your money, investing in things you don’t understand, being financially afraid and ignoring your finances.

Here are 10 more possible reasons you aren’t rich:

1. You care what your car looks like: A car is a means of transportation to get from one place to another, but many people don’t view it that way. Instead, they consider it a reflection of themselves and spend money every two years or so to impress others instead of driving the car for its entire useful life and investing the money saved.

2. You feel entitlement: If you believe you deserve to live a certain lifestyle, have certain things and spend a certain amount before you have earned to live that way, you will have to borrow money. That large chunk of debt will keep you from building wealth.

3. You lack diversification: There is a reason one of the oldest pieces of financial advice is to not keep all your eggs in a single basket. Having a diversified investment portfolio makes it much less likely that wealth will suddenly disappear.

4. You started too late: The magic of compound interest works best over long periods of time. If you find you’re always saying there will be time to save and invest in a couple more years, you’ll wake up one day to find retirement is just around the corner and there is still nothing in your retirement account.

5. You don’t do what you enjoy: While your job doesn’t necessarily need to be your dream job, you need to enjoy it. If you choose a job you don’t like just for the money, you’ll likely spend all that extra cash trying to relieve the stress of doing work you hate.

6. You don’t like to learn: You may have assumed that once you graduated from college, there was no need to study or learn. That attitude might be enough to get you your first job or keep you employed, but it will never make you rich. A willingness to learn to improve your career and finances are essential if you want to eventually become wealthy.

7. You buy things you don’t use: Take a look around your house, in the closets, basement, attic and garage and see if there are a lot of things you haven’t used in the past year. If there are, chances are that all those things you purchased were wasted money that could have been used to increase your net worth.

8. You don’t understand value: You buy things for any number of reasons besides the value that the purchase brings to you. This is not limited to those who feel the need to buy the most expensive items, but can also apply to those who always purchase the cheapest goods. Rarely are either the best value, and it’s only when you learn to purchase good value that you have money left over to invest for your future.

9. Your house is too big: When you buy a house that is bigger than you can afford or need, you end up spending extra money on longer debt payments, increased taxes, higher upkeep and more things to fill it. Some people will try to argue that the increased value of the house makes it a good investment, but the truth is that unless you are willing to downgrade your living standards, which most people are not, it will never be a liquid asset or money that you can ever use and enjoy.

10.  You fail to take advantage of opportunities: There has probably been more than one occasion where you heard about someone who has made it big and thought to yourself, “I could have thought of that.” There are plenty of opportunities if you have the will and determination to keep your eyes open.

What it comes down to: your lifestyle defines your wallet. The best way to get a hold of your money is to first get a hold of yourself.

Marking the 19th Maison Martin Margiela brand store in the world, MMM announces the opening of a 2700 sq ft temporary shop in Miami, Florida.

From the press release:

Following the F Factory Limited Edition Experiences, it was only logical to find a temporary location in the Miami Design District. Many will immediately ask as to exactly how temporary “Temporary” is! The Maison Martin Margiela’s reply to this is “However long it takes to find our dream home….. Yet temporary this location is!”

The atmosphere of this shop, adapted and decorated by Maison Martin Margiela, also draws on the prolific and iconographic use of whites – of furniture, objects, fabrics and textures, old and new – typical of the spirit of the Maison Martin Margiela’s Paris premises, a former school of industrial design, in the 11th arrondissement of the city. Furniture and architectural elements re-interpreted have been brought in to build on the space’s personality. The shop is a collection of “areas” to house each of the Maison’s collections. Each area is a distinct and unique space which uses elements of the Maison such as printed “wood” floors and tromp l’oeil effects. Using new and innovating expressions, the overall atmosphere of our Maimi store is composed by our symbolic variations of whites and our selection of furniture, materials and objects.

I must say from time to time I really have to accept the fact that I can be a little selfish at times. This weekend was one of those moments…

If you’re wondering why, well it’s because I couldn’t give a damn about the people that just don’t get it. This weekend wasn’t for them. It was all about ME and my friends that truly appreciate and craved good music. uestlove of the ROOTS came thru to AE and rocked for 3 hours w/ Maseo and Yameen giving shot out thru the head phones. Yes, head phones like the old school house party days when you didn’t have a mic. Well, we didn’t have a mic! I had a blast and I loved every second of it. Yeah, I was a little selfish with the last second evite but when its complimentary entry and drinks you gotta do that some time. Seriously, everyone that came out and had a great time, I do it for yall as well. Till next time..

Max:
Greatness can only come about from immense sacrifices..

I say this because, I think of all the amazing lives lived and what they have all gone through in the process of living a great life. “Greatness” is a big burden to carry. I believe we’re all equipped for greatness but not all of us are willing to embrace the sacrifices or endure the burdens that come with it. Without the great ones stepping up to the plate risking everything secure in their life, in order to effect change, we all stand still..

Dao:
But do you think the great ones ever felt that burden? Or did they do what they felt like they needed to do.

Max:
They must have felt that burden because there had to be sacrifices, there is no burden without sacrifice. They definitely did what they needed to do regardless of criticism, insecurities, fear, opposition and even self doubt. The feeling of burden is a result of sacrificing things that brings comfort to ones life. They pushed past all these hurdles in order to make those necessary sacrifices that we know bring about all sorts of burden. I feel these steps are crucial and possibly mandatory steps to greatness. Every time I think about it, I have this feeling of wanting to take my hat off to those that have endured to bring about change. I just wish at the end of the day, we are able to feel like we’ve lived our life to its greatest potential. It’s less about being great cause the greatness part the world will judge.. But one thing is for certain you can’t deny a life greatly lived.

The Time Is Always Now….

The Peter Tunney Experiment will be closing at the end of this month. At a minimum, if you’re in Miami please stop by to check out Peter’s work. I had the Former Mayor of Miami, Manny Diaz and Police Chief, John Timoney come thru and pick up some of Peter’s “Tunney Money”. If you have a few dollars to invest, I suggest you pick something up cause I promise you’ll be kicking yourself in the ASS later. Email me if you’re interested.
